Griko is the spoken language of people living in the, so called, Grecìa Salentina, a part of Salento where people speak an ancient Greek language, survived until now from ancient immigrations from Greece.
The Passion of Christ is the song traditionally performed during the Easter Week in the Greek area of the Salento (Southern Apulia ­ Italy).
The week before Palm Sunday a small group of peasants, dressed for the holiday and carring a big olive branch suitably adorned with colored ribbons of various lenghts, sacred images, and oranges (fertility symbols), sing in the local language the Passion of Christ, moving from one square to another, from one crossroad to another, from one village to another, around the whole Greek area.
The complete version of this song is now, for the first time, on a CD. You can find a short version of this song in Canto d¹amore (track 02 - 4'17'') or in Musiche e canti popolari del Salento (A' Lazzaro ­ track 02 ­ CD1 ­ 7'50'').

Only a good singer can transform those elements which consitute the deepest of a song in a oral tradition: the style of execution, voice timbre, the modalities of the emission of sound, the ornamental techniques, etc.
The great singers are more than simply Œinformators¹ or Œtradition bearers¹.
They are musicians in the full sense of the term, motivated by a great passion for their vocal art.
Uccio Bandello (died on June 26, 1998) and Uccio Aloisi (alive) are great Salentine singers. Their splendid vocal interpretations can be clearly heard in this CD.
